Course Description
Canon, People, Pedagogies: From Framework to Action offers over 30 hours of instruction through a live online course that is based on the social justice framework—Canon, People, Pedagogies, or CPP. The framework was developed by ethnomusicologist, music educator, and course instructor, Dr. Danielle Brown, specifically to assist music educators and scholars in creating classroom environments that are truly diverse, equitable, and inclusive. CPP offers tools and strategies to restructure the current system of music education in the U.S. that continues to privilege Western art music and Eurocentric pedagogical methods. Using the principles of CPP, in this course participants will gain a deeper understanding of the complex ways that racism is embedded in our music programs and teaching practices and learn how to effect positive change through actions that are not merely performative, but rather lead to the creation of a more socially just field.
