The Legacy of the Anglophone Caribbean in Cuba
Dr. Brown embarks on a new long-term project in which she draws connections between the heritage and culture of the central region of Cuba and Central Brooklyn. Her research in Cuba focuses on the descendants of migrants from the English-speaking Caribbean who traveled to the country during the early part of the 20th century, connecting them with residents of West Indian enclaves in Central Brooklyn. In particular, Dr. Brown will look at how musical legacies are passed down in different (West Indian) diasporic contexts. The project will also explore the themes of blackness in Cuba and the Caribbean diaspora, as well as Yoruba religious practices in the diaspora.
